Background

The Regional Development Division (BPW) was established as a result of the restructuring of the Economic Planning Unit, Prime Minister’s Department (EPU, JPM) in January 2019 and continues to function as EPU, JPM was restructured as the Ministry of Economy. BPW is divided into four (4) units: Spatial Development, Rural Development, Corridor Development, and Regional Cooperation.

Objective

To ensure efficient and effective development planning with optimal resource utilization towards achieving balanced development between regions, states, and urban and rural areas.

Main Functions

  • To formulate policies, strategies, and programs for the distribution of socioeconomic activities and infrastructure and the provision of quality social amenities to improve the quality of life in rural areas;
  • To coordinate, evaluate, and formulate urban development policies, strategies, and programs;
  • To plan, evaluate, and coordinate policies and strategies for regional economic corridor development;
  • To coordinate sub-regional cooperation programs;
  • To manage the Development Allocation (DE) ceiling for the Five-Year Malaysia Plan.

  • To evaluate, review, and coordinate strategy and program proposals submitted by Ministries/agencies and provide transparent feedback;
  • To prepare, identify, and improve the implementation of programs or projects for the Five-Year Plan in a professional, efficient, and effective manner;
  • To evaluate, coordinate, and endorse development allocations for programs and projects under regional development in alignment with national-level outcome achievements;
  • To analyze and evaluate new project proposals and issue change notices within seven working days after receiving complete information from the Ministry; and
  • To prepare reports/reviews/responses on issues and matters related to regional development within the specified time frame.
