The Household Income Survey (HIS) is one of the surveys conducted by the Department of Statistics Malaysia. This survey was first conducted in 1973 and has since been carried out twice every five years, that is, two surveys in each Malaysian Development Plan period. The main objective of the HIS is to measure the economic well-being of the population; to collect information on the distribution of household income according to various socio-economic characteristics, and to provide basic data for calculating the Poverty Line Income (PLI). Statistics on household income and poverty are used for formulating policies and development plans, especially for strategies and programs aimed at poverty eradication and income distribution. Statistics on household expenditure are obtained from the Household Expenditure Survey (HES) conducted by the Department of Statistics Malaysia. The main objective of this survey is to collect information about the level and pattern of household consumption expenditure on various types of goods and services, which serves as a basis for determining the types of goods and services to be included in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) basket and is used to update the CPI weights.
